I realise their is increasing uncertainty about the information concerning acceptable yield from aquifers and its implications on pumping limits.

I'm interested to know if the groundwater - bore water being extracted for use by irrigators of large-scale agricultural ventures (in certain areas of Australia) is high in salt content. And if there is direct correlations between the long-term extraction and use of such water resources and soil or biota degradation or unsustainable agricultural land use?

Has anyone experience with this? Or know of any particular research which has been undertaken?

Ponding techniques - soil soakage and vegetation promotion

There has been some interesting ponding trial workshops being undertaken in partnership with land managers and the WA Department of Agriculture and Food and Central West Catchment Authority in the Kimberley region of WA at Larrawa Station.

Ponding involves the use of large machinery such as a grader to plough compacted soil and construct buffers or banks to slow down the run-off of water across the landscape during rainfall, to increase water infiltration into the soil and promote regeneration of vegetation. See photos (Matt Brown).

This is a great way for pastoralists to improve land and soil resources and stop the run-off of water to foster native regeneration.
The main lessons learned from the workshop include the following:

A 16G (grader) was more economical than a 12G to build waterponds, and won more dirt per pass.

Banks built with the opposed disc plough were too small to be effective at ponding water.

Surveying for ponds is best completed by a professional experienced in surveying ponds.

An experienced machine operator is essential to get full value out of "machine hire".

The workshop builds on the work of landscape ecologists such as Hugh Pringle who has been involved in such programs in WA and the NT.

On Thursday 10 May 2012, the Minister for the Environment, the Hon. Robyn Parker MP, announced the commencement of a review of the BioBanking Scheme.

A review of BioBanking and the BioBanking Assessment Methodology are required under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995. The scope of the review includes:

the performance and cost-effectiveness of the scheme

the extent to which the scheme is achieving the goal of maintaining or improving biodiversity conservation

the operation and use of the BioBanking Assessment Methodology and its relationship with similar methodologies

the scheme’s framework, including issues associated with biobanking agreements, statements and transactions, the BioBanking Trust Fund and assessor accreditation.

The aim of the review is to identify the strengths and challenges of BioBanking and evaluate ways of improving it to ensure it achieves credible environmental outcomes and is practical to use.

Public exhibition and consultation

A summary document, discussion paper and revised BioBanking Assessment Methodology have been prepared:
The revised BioBanking Assessment Methodology (20120029drftbbassessmeth .pdf, 660KB) demonstrates ways in which some of the issues canvassed in the discussion paper can be addressed. The recommended changes are based on experience gained from using the methodology over the past two years and include amendments publicly exhibited in late 2010.

I'm interested to know how the NSW EPA is progressing since becoming an independent statutory authority to the Office of Environment & Heritage (February 2012), carrying out licensing and regulatory environmental protection functions.

There has been quite rapid change occurring in the NSW ministry over the past 6 months with the new cabinet. It really becomes quite unsettling when I hear of changes to environment portfolios, ministers and agencies.

I was not aware that Christmas Island has such a colourful history...

Christmas Island was ''transferred'' to the Australian government on October of 1958 (after paying the Singapore administration UKŁ2.9m in compensation for lost revenue) following the 2nd World War, when it was under the jurisdiction of the British Colony of Singapore.

The Christmas Island Act 1958 was soon established and provides the framework for the Territory's administrative legislative and judicial system. Amendments were captured in the Territories Law Reform Act 1992

Following this the first Shire Council was elected in 1993. Local government services to the Island are administered by the Shire of Christmas Island (SOCI).

What I'd like to know is in what way were the Indigenous communities factored into the design of this governance system? And what role do they play now?

The company is very glad to find this form and read the threads and wealth of information that is within this site. They are a alternative fuel manufacture located in the Northwest United States our product is called "PEFF" which stands for Polyolefin Encapsulated Fiber Fuel.

This fuel burns clean as natural gas and burns at 18,000 BTU. Our patented system produces 6000 LB per hour and utilizes landfill refuge and recycling residue as its feed stock and uses landfill gas as its energy source.

They have on plant running and producing fuel for the cement industry, pulp and paper and sugar industry. We want to expand and take this into the global marketplace. We are as cost competitive as coal based on mmbtu factors.

Just saw this on a facebook message. Anyone got any idea or any news on them?
Apparently they are looking for marketing directions.

3) Do you think that countries should reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a certain percentage to combat global warming?
4) What are your thoughts on the governments effort to combat global warming ?
5) What should be the focal point of the technologies? Eco friendly or cost effective?

From what I have read in the past, Europe is far further ahead than we are in this respect. But, when I think of heat energy from industrial processes, heat energy from energy conversion, heat energy from air conditioning and computer farms that could all be reused or converted, it would offer serious gains to try to reclaim this energy instead of dumping it into the environment.
